Artist's Comments

This is a Pleurodeles waltl larvae, or Spanish Ribbed Newt. Just a tiny little guy. It's really hard to see (probably impossible in the photo) but he has tiny little hair thin legs now. You can just make out his gills. At a different angle you would be able to see his lunch inside his stomach. :D I'm raising a few of these guys. I think I have six right now.

Aww, he's adorable! He blends in so well with the vegetation he's almost invisible. If I look reeeaally closely I can see two tiny legs :D

Well done for taking such a clear photo of this tiny one :D

No, I'm not going to....I'm not....I might.... SQUEEEEE!! So cute!

How small are they, and do you have any adult ones? And something I've wondered for a while but always forgot to ask - what sort of camera do you use?

People say if you stare at the darkness long enough, it stares back. The only reason it stares back is because you start to lose yourself to your own reflection.

haha They are pretty cute. :)

Right now, they're maaaaybe half an inch long. Very small. I don't have any adults yet. Hopefully these ones will survive that long though. They're extremely delicate at this point, so nothing is for sure yet.

Most of the photos in my gallery were taken with a Nikon D50. All of the new ones were, anyhow. I used to have a Nikon coolpix, but I haven't used it in a couple years. I JUST got a Nikon D200 that I haven't even tried out yet. I should probably use that on these little guys, since it has higher megapixels and some nifty macro features that my D50 doesn't have.

It really is. I keep staring at them, wondering how the hell their body can function at that size. Their legs and gills are so small and thin that you'd have to measure them in fractions of a millimeter. :O

Thanks. I definitely will. :) Hopefully I'll have a whole growth series like I did with the pacman tadpole. :)

I'm pretty sure those are the gills you see. The legs are thinner than hair and completely transparent, and this is kind of a crappy picture. I can't make out the legs, and I know where to look. ;P Being transparent like that is pretty sweet... Nothing can see them, and I can tell if they've been eating, since you can clearly see the contents of their stomach (from a different angle, anyhow). :D
